Soon Yi’s House
Eun Sun showed up the night before, when I opened the
door she fell into my arms in tears. What had happened to my sister that she
was so distraught? I made coffee and she told her story. I was in disbelief
that Young Min’s mother had been so heartless, then saddened that Eun Sun had
given up her love. Their relationship was one that I envied; they had been so
in love for years. I had been there the day Eun Sun and Young Min met,
electricity between the two was ecstatic as soon as their eyes met. There was
no keeping them apart until now. She cried so much that he drained what energy
she had left and fell asleep on the sofa.
I thanked god
my parent weren’t alive to see Eun Sun go through this suffering. Mothers’
heart would have been broken. She would have made red bean porridge, and lily
tea for Eun Sun and stayed by her side until she was over her pain. Now I had
to take the place of mother, and I felt sorry towards my sister for what she
had to endure at the hands of that evil woman. Eun Sun didn’t want to be found,
she didn’t want to go back so I promised her that I would lie and say that she
hadn’t contacted me at all.
Young Min had been parked in front of my house since two
a.m. He didn’t get out of the car nor did he call my phone he just sat there as
if he was waiting for Eun Sun would walk up the street any minute. Now he was
getting up walking up to the gate ringing the bell. I quickly woke my sister up
and rushed her up the stairs and hid her bags in the pantry closet.
When I felt it was safe I buzzed Young Min in. As he
stepped into the door and removed his shoes, I could see the sadness in his
eyes, he was in bad shape. He hadn’t sleep, hadn’t eaten any thing since the
day before. His hair was disheveled and clothes wrinkled, face unshaven. He
bowed weekly and took a seat where Eun Sun had been sleeping.
“Has she called you or been here yet?”
“I’m sorry Young Min but I still have not heard from
Eun Sun.”
Young Min lowered his head when, he lifted it there
were tears in his eye and he dropped to his knees before me.
“Choi Soon Yi, I’m sorry please, forgive me? I tried
to protect Eun Sun I failed, I have searched everywhere and I can’t find her.
Please forgive me.”
I couldn’t bear to watch him cry and beg for
forgiveness, I already knew that he wasn’t at fault. I held no hard feeling
towards him. I badly wanted to tell him that Eun Sun was hiding upstairs;
instead I told him that if I heard from her or if she came here he would be the
first person I would call. I watched from the gate as he drove off.
Two months had passed and Eun Sun had her place, and
was doing well. We met every night for dinner and sometimes lunch, she
struggled with moving on, there were times when she would call me in the middle
of the night crying or asked me to come over because she couldn’t sleep.
I could tell that she loved and missed Young Min, but
she still refused to call him or go back she would say “Don’t ask me to go
back, his life is better with out me there.”
I would hug her and say okay. She pressed on. For
those two months Young Min would call to see if she had contacted me, each time
I lied. Private investigators even started showing up. Asking question, if I
knew where she would go, who her friends were, had I been in contact with her
and each time he would come I would lie.
Then in late April Eun Sun called me after her
doctors’ appointment, she had found out that she was pregnant. She was scared
of being found, she was scared that if she were found that Young Mins’ mother
would find out about the baby and take it away from her again. So she packed up
her house, and off to Paris she went.
The month before Eun Sun was to have the baby, I took
my vacation from work and flew to Paris to be there to help her. Together we
set up the nursery, and went shopping for baby clothes, strollers, bottles diapers,
all the necessities she would need. My poor sister, her belly was so big and it
was hard for her.
November 14th, 2008 Eun Sun went into labor
while we were having dinner at Le Bleu Restaurant. So much for eating blue
lobster sauce covered in light gravy. Her
labor was twelve hours and finally to this world came a beautiful baby girl,
but some thing was wrong.
